Custom Towline Carts with Integrated Lift Take Motorcycles for a Spin

(Niagara Falls, NY  April 20, 2004)   Handling Specialty engineered and manufactured a custom tow-veyor cart with an onboard scissor lift for SI Systems, an integrator specializing in automated towline systems.  The end user of these 1,000 lb. capacity carts is a major US motorcycle manufacturer.

 

Integrated into each custom cart is a hydraulic lift which is used to automatically raise and lower a motorcycle chassis to suit the various ergonomic heights required by workers along the assembly line.  Each cart is equipped with onboard auto-height controls (supplied by others) and a cable transducer that ensures vertical positioning accuracy.   Linear guides provide increased stability and rigidity to the lifting mechanism as it travels through its 24" of vertical range.  For safety reasons, two onboard buttons were included to allow a temporary manual override of the lifting system.  To meet the specifications of the client, the cart is designed to be a mere 13.5" tall when the lift is fully collapsed.

 

The rotating deck on top of the lift also allows the motorcycle chassis to be rotated manually to suit the needs of each operator.  The deck uses a slewing ring design and can spin a full 360 degrees with 45 degree detents and locking points in 22.5 degree increments. 

 

These unique carts are powered by DC power housed in two 12V onboard batteries.  Charging shoes on the underside of the carts interface with automatic charging stations along the line.  Polyurethane casters mounted in protective housings and tow pins on the front the carts allow the units to be pulled down the assembly line by an in-floor towline conveyor.

 

For operator safety, the cart incorporates accordion bellows on all four sides and a hydraulic safety fuse to prevent collapse of the platform in the event of hydraulic line failure.  The smallest design details have been attended to with this custom cart, from major design features such as lift capacity and size right down to traveller straps to hold assembly paper work.
