160,000 lb. Capacity Custom Tilter and Rotator for Nuclear Power Facility

(Niagara Falls, NY  March 23, 2004)  This 160,000 lb. capacity custom tilt and rotate device was designed for use in a nuclear power facility in Ontario.  Specifically, the unit rotates 90 or 180 degrees in either direction to position a Dry Storage Container (DSC) containing spent nuclear fuel rods.  The process begins when a full container is lifted from a pool of water via crane and placed on the rotator.  An operator uses a hand pendant controller to rotate and tilt the DSC to allow water to drain from the container.  The 3 degree tilt angle must be maintained for 24 hours for complete drainage to occur.

For convenience, the rotator was designed with vertical storage in mind.  The power unit and gear motor were incorporated into the rotator to allow for both horizontal and vertical positioning. To transport the rotator, a sling was provided to pick the unit up via overhead crane and place it against a wall.

Other design considerations include the ability to manually rotate the unit in the event of a power failure and the guarding of all pinch points.  To allow for wash down and steam decontamination, the unit was made of epoxy painted carbon steel.
